Valkenburg even more touristic
The municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul uses this slogan when it is announced on October 22, 1991 that the Tour de France and its entourage will land in the Geul town in July 1992. After decades of being the backdrop to various national and international races, the Tour de France is finally coming to Valkenburg. In this Tour, in which no less than 7 different countries are visited, Valkenburg gets a stage finish (July 11, 1992) and a start on the next day.
After a leading group (including Ad Wijnands and Frans Maassen) had already caught up before passing the Dutch border, 4 men (Gilles Delion, Stephen Roche, Rolf Jaermann and Valerio Tebaldi) separated themselves from the rest on the climb through the Vijlenerbosch . A blistering finale in which the battle-around-pendulum is attacked has a blood-curdling last kilometer, after which the Frenchman Gilles Delion simply proves to be the smartest, but certainly also the strongest.
