Vacansoleil-DCM took part in the Tour de France in 2011. The team gained international fame after Johnny Hoogerland captured the mountain jersey in the ninth stage. In this ride he was hit by a car, after which he was catapulted into the barbed wire on the right side of the road. Hoogerland came out battered with a fright and grew into a cycling hero in a short time. Vacansoleil-DCM also delivered the best classified Dutch rider in the general classification in this Tour, namely Rob Ruijgh in 21st place.
