Unibet.com Cycling Team was a Swedish-Belgian cycling team. The team existed since 2006 and competed in the Pro Tour. It was a de facto continuation of the MrBookmaker.com cycling team, as the main sponsor changed its name. Many young Belgian riders and some foreign sub-top riders rode for the team.
On December 16, 2006, it was announced that Unibet.com would receive its Pro Tour license for 2007. This meant an expansion of the number of ProTour teams. This expansion became the basis of a conflict between UCI and ASO, of which Unibet seemed to bear the brunt. As the organizer of major competitions such as Paris-Nice and the Tour de France, ASO wanted to have more say with regard to the teams it starts in its competitions. In addition, ASO argued that French law does not allow sports sponsorship for gambling companies. After long deliberations between the two organizations, Unibet was actually not admitted to Paris-Nice. The team has to rely on wildcards for ASO competitions. In a hurry, the team attracted another sponsor, especially for these games, so that the second problem would not stand in the way. However, the team again did not receive a wild card for the important match Paris-Roubaix. Unibet.com had appealed against the outcome of the consultation between UCI and ASO. Unibet has also been denied access to the Walloon classics Walloon Arrow and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, because according to the ASO, Belgian legislation does not allow sponsorship by gambling companies either. It became really confusing when a spokesman for the Belgian judiciary confirmed this and indicated that organizers who start Unibet can even be held complicit. Unibet had started in the Tour of Flanders in its normal shirts a few days before this report.
