Mercatone Uno was a San Marinese and later Italian cycling team. Mercatone Uno was active from 1992 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2003. Although several great cyclists have ridden for the team, Mercatone Uno is best known as Marco Pantani's team.
In the first period, Mercatone Uno was a team that consisted half of San Marinese cyclists and the other half of Italians. Franco Gini and Antonio Salutini headed this squad. Francesco Casagrande was the leader in the laps, Michele Bartoli for the classics and Adriano Baffi and Mario Cipollini for the bunch sprints; Silvio Martinello won several track races. In 1996, this team continued under the name of co-sponsor Saeco.
Mercatone Uno made a restart after a year's absence in the peloton after taking over the racing stable from Carrera Jeans in 1997. Sports director Giuseppe Martinelli had a strong climber in Marco Pantani. Beat Zberg rode well in classics and Sergio Barbero and Mario Traversoni, among others, won stages in other races. Pantani grew into a complete tour rider and managed to win both the Tour of Italy and the Tour de France in one year. The year in which he did that, 1998, is therefore the absolute highlight of Mercatone Uno. In 2000, Stefano Garzelli won the Giro d'Italia by beating Vini Caldirola rider Francesco Casagrande in the time trial on the penultimate day.
From 2001, various riders became involved in doping scandals. Daniele De Paoli, Riccardo Forconi, Marco Pantani, Roberto Sgambelluri and Marcello Siboni are suspended due to high hematocrit values or doping use. The team also hardly wins any matches and is disbanded in 2003.
