The Nürburgring is a racing circuit in Nürburg, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. On September 27, 1925, construction of the circuit around the village and the medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel began. The opening was on the weekend of June 18 and 19, 1927. The circuit is nicknamed 'De Groene Hel'.

Previously, the course took riders over 28.265 km. It then consisted of the Nordschleife (22.835 km) and Südschleife (7.747 km), along 173 bends (89 left and 84 right bends). The circuit was built at the time as part of an employment project to boost the economy in the Eifel. The circuit became one of the most famous circuits in the world. But since the famous Austrian Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda had a serious (almost fatal) crash there in 1976, just before the Bergwerk bend, the circuit is no longer used for Formula 1 races.
